We're Back! So let's Kickoff!

Welcome back to 100% 3G
My son Noah on his 9th Birthday at the O.Co!
From the Get Down Lounge:

*We are back--and hopefully so are that once fun loving band of platooners called the Oakland A's. A walk-off 4-3 win yesterday ideally can jump start this group that has been scuffling mightily the last month. The issues are simple: to begin with, many in their lineup were way--and I mean way--overproducing. Then you mix in injuries, slumps, and a brutal road trip to Atlanta and Kansas City, and man oh man, the grind is grinding? Did the Cespedes trade affect the A's collective psyche? It sure appears that way. All the factors combined with the fact that the A's played from the lead for so long--the lead is where you can only go one way, and everyone has you on the radar--the pressure to win, may have taken it's collective toll, especially in the batter's box.

*The real issue: the A's don't have an every day player who is a go-to-guy. A leader, a guy the team can count on day in, night out. Coco might be that guy, but he is injured way to much. When times are tough, who can the A's count on to get that big hit? To lead in the clubhouse?
Issue #2. The A's might be the slowest team up the middle--at second and short--in the baseball universe. Jed Lowrie can hit, and he must if the A's are going to play into October. The up-the-middle defense is the one area I feel Beane and Co. did not address adequately in fielding a winning team.

(The main difference between the Giants and A's--in my humble opinion--Hunter Pence and Buster Posey. Every day players, stars, who produce, big time. Guys who always play HARD. The Gigos are rolling....and who is the very hotly contested NL, wants to face MadBomb in a one game wild card? The guys in Black and Orange love the even years this decade: 2010, 2012, 2014? I love the Giants....this weekend. Especially if Panda and co. sweep the Tigers!  B. Flave--consider this Giants love your BDay present!)

*Ironically, the Anaheim Angels have quietly flown under the radar. After adding Houston Street, this team appears to have zero issues--even with their picthing injuries. Earlier this month, Josh Hamilton looked as healthy and "bouncy" as I can ever recall. The Angels are scary (their fans are rather annoying, but that's a story for another day!)

Stanford Stadium--a great football venue! This was my look
for the USC vs Stanford tilt, September 6 in Palo Alto.
Transitioning to the gridiron.....

*What a gorgeous day on The Farm it was yesterday afternoon. It was fantastic September Bay Area Weather, and two pretty darn good football teams were slugging it out! I thought both teams played it pretty close to the vest at times, regardless, it was a splendid afternoon. The Cardinal, physical. The Trojans, athletic and speedy. Oh man can I empathise with the Cardinal today, as they lament the amount of missed scoring opportunities. Not only did Stanford miss a chip-shot field goal attempt in the first half, they also were held on downs inside the Trojan 4-yard line. I would imagine, if Coach Shaw could go-back in a time machine, he would have elected to put the 3 points on the board! This game came down to Trojan kicker Andre Heidari calmly stepping up and nailing a 53 yard monster kick with just over 2 minutes remaining.  I was looking forward to overtime, or overtimes, as Stanford drove to my end of the field!  (I was hopeful OT would be on my end as well!) The Trojans came up big, forcing a late turnover, and the Trojans party began. The USC fan base travelled very well to Northern California!

*Boooooooo (I love booing) to USC Athletic Director coming down to the field to speak to the officials. Come on Man, this is a Big Boy game. If it weren't for the harsh-and I do mean harsh--penalties USC received during the Reggie Bush/What's your problem Pete Carroll years, I think the NCAA would come down hard on USC's want-to-be-big-man-perfect-tanned-I-hope-your-health-is-good-athletic director. (When Haden was the QB for SC way back when, could he even see from his helmet?)

Fight'en On Baby!
*Even though I am a small-town NorCal guy--man nobody rocks the post game win like the USC people-nobody! The SC Band, Song Girls, and fan base celebrate in one-of-a-kind groovalicious, funkadelik, take-that-UCLA style. Their post-game party, good for my soul!

*I am a bit of an enigma when it comes to college football. Although I want to "bump" with the Trojans, my team resides in South Bend--who, knocked around those Michigan Wolverines 31-0 yesterday. While the Irish are my clear number one, right behind, would have to be, well let's jump across the Bay, to the Gold & Blue of those California Golden Bears. (No worries Tim Lucas!) Thus, my Bucket List tends to go back and forth, ND @ SC, or ND at Michigan in the Big House with 105,000 (literally a gazillion) people going bananas? (How long are the bathroom lines at the Big House by the way?) Thus, I have decided, in my honor naturally, it would be ideal to have the Lira's/Nation's Hamburgers/Seven-Eleven Bowl game played New Years Day at the O.Co, USC vs the Irish. ND must sport the Green Jerseys! (Since the game is in Oakland, might as well have the Raiderettes don the ND unis as honorary cheerleaders for the Irish. Wheh-I need a glass of water!)

*As my favorite color is Green, and I tend to like yellow/gold, the Oregon/Michigan State game last night, extremely pleasing to my eye. The Oregon QB, Marus Mariota, looks like the next big thing!

Speaking of QB's it is onto the NFL....or "Riding in the Carr" shall we say?!?

*With the pride of Central California--the Fresno State Bulldogs--off to an 0-2 start, I am pretty sure all eyes will be on NYC, where Derek Carr will be leading the Ray-duzs into the Meadowlands. Carr provides hope, and hope is a good thing.....it just seems like the Silver and Black need a lot of little things to go their way to be a winning team. If Darren McFadden can stay healthy, Charles Woodson play like he did during his youth, and rookie linebacker Khalil Mack terrorizes opponents, well, that's why they play the games huh?
When a team hasn't been living in rare air, nothing like a fast start to boost confidence. A flight from NYC to Oaktown, after a win, now that is how a team bond's man style! Raiders vs. Jets, also very pleasing to my eye!

*Niners? Oohh....lots of distractions there. Santa Clara, er I mean SF, will probably go as far the mighty shoulders of Kap and Harbaugh will take them. The 49ers "issues" are a journalists dream this season (and a PR department's nightmare!).

*You are wondering about Super Bowl Predictions are you? Well, I believe the real question in the NFL is when the changing of the QB "guard" will occur. Manning, Brady, Rogers, Brees, have been on top for a longgg time. Can the Colts behind luck arise? Andy Dalton and the Bengals appear on the verge of the next step, but it's a Big Step? Kap--is this his year? How about Mr. Underlooked, Cam Newton. The Panthers appear to be the most underrated and under respected team in the league? Will Carr have an impact? RG 3, and Romo, can they ascend to the top? Flacco--can he raise the cup again?

*The Seahawks, hum, as Yoda would say, "very interesting." Will the zebras throw a few more flags (and if so will Pat Haden rush down to the sidelines?) against Pete's boys. Can such a physical team survive the long and grueling NFL season? In our society, winners receive and earn so much adulation, can the 'Hawks maintain their focus? Seattle now wearing the bulls eye. Just how good is Russell Wilson?

*When it doubt it takes luck and prayers, so I guess I am going with:  Colts vs Saints (although my pancreas is saying follow the P's, Patriots vs Panthers).

*Enjoy the games everyone--look for us on Sundays! You can also follow on twitter at 100percent3G.

Happy Birthday to my main man Brian, Patrick (O) Flaherty. I owe you linguisa sandwiches big fella!

EE.UU, EE.UU, Enjoy USA!

*Why the Cup Love?

*In the Summer of 2002, my wife and I--escorted by my parents--honeymooned briefly in Paris, and then the homeland, Portugal. In fact, if you recall, that is when the USA defeated Portugal--on that day the USA scored 3 quick goals on their way to a stunning victory! The television posted the USA as EE.UU--thus, my chant sounded like:  ay-ay-ooh-ooh.  It is all a little ironic...back then I was actually pulling for the USA, this time, well....thinking back, that USA-Portugal game in 2002, that was the first Soccer game I watched from start to finish!

(Hey Kacy Bowers--perhaps next World Cup we can go back to the old country and take in the Cup Euro style!  By the way, nobody hits the weak cheese like my man KB!)

*In our great land of sports fanatics , what makes this WC so exciting, for the first time, many of us--most of us--pulling for the same side! We Americans also don't feel like the under dog often, thus the Cup Del Mundo a double-dip of Patriotic excitement.  This phenomenon explains the California Chrome love we witnessed and experienced recently--our horse, like our team!  Much like a triple crown would be fabulous....a world cup title looks pretty darn tasty too!

*The A's lose in grand style and they make headlines.  When they keep winning--not so much.  Part of the reason for the meltdown--their pen gassed.  Billy B--please dig into your bag and pull out a starting pitcher!
The Price is right Billy! Gigantes coming to the O.Co next always, ALWAYS, a roaring good time!

*I hope Serina Williams is OK....the Williams sisters were forced to withdraw from their doubles match in Wimbledon due to Serina's ill health.  To you Serina, get well. What's up with American tennis...well, thats a conversation for another day--but look across our great land, many more people on the hoop courts, soccer pitches, and even the link's.  I am just saying....(that's for you Flave!).

*The NBA draft just doesn't carry the same juice and buzz with me as the NFL and even the MLB drafts. Right now, isn't the Association really about 3 teams: the Spurs, whichever team Bron Bron plays for, and OC Thunder?

Enjoy the Day USA, and Californians...enjoy your Fireworks--be safe!

Shodown Sunday Euro Style!

*Showdown Sunday from the Get Down Lounge:

*(PSST:  The Swinging A's have the best record in the MLB--however, outside of the East Bay, it's a little like Voldemort in the Harry Potter Saga--no national media talking about it!  In fact, last night on ESPN, highlights vs. the win over the Nation, started, started, 24 minutes into the show. I am sure if the Yankees or Dodgers or Red Sox possessed the best records....ish!  Just keep winning Oakland, just keep winning.)

*Listening to Michelle Wie, it sounds as if this talented young lady has grown up.  I would not be honest if I didn't say I wasn't rooting for her today in the Ladies U.S. Open.

*I am amazed at the build up this week for the Brazilian Amazon Showdown between Team USA and my homeland (well at least my father's) Portugal!  As a proud Portuguese American, today's match on the pitch, one of those few win-win sporting events.  Here are two things to keep in mind:

1. Christiano Rinaldo is playing for his "American" Legacy.  While considered one of the top players in the world, Rinaldo hasn't accomplished much on the World Cup Stage.  CR is also scuffling with a troublesome knee.  The question I have been posing all week: do CR's countrymen want to rally around the media darling? I have yet to set him talking, or laughing with any of hit Portuguese teammates.  Try this on: has anyone ever heard CR proclaim the word "we" when talking about his National team.  There definitely is an I in Rinaldo, the question therefore, is there a "we."

2. Everyone seems to be forgetting in 2002, the Americans upset the Portuguese in pool play.  I remember vividly watching that game in a family friend's home in the Northern Portuguese town of Ihlavo.  The Americans struck early and often, winning 3-1.  Our hosts were stunned.  "You don't understand," dear family friend Mario said in clear English to me. "Losing in Soccer to the United States would be like you losing to Portugal in Basketball."  Wow. The only words Mario ever uttered in clear English!

*Today's match-up really could be a classic.  I can envision this game tossing and turning, and while Portugal looked terrible versus Germany, something tells me their pride is on the line.  If I had to put my life, on it, I would say 3-1 Portugal.  Maybe 3-2....the Group of Death is about to get extremely interesting--and entertaining!

*There is a certainly some positive buzz in Raider Nation.  The Silver and Black have a long way to go, however, it wasn't all that long ago that the Mike Singeltary led-49ers were uber scuffling themselves.  At least here in CenCal, the drafting of Derek Carr has given the Raiders plenty of positive PR.  (I have my tickets! My pal and Old Man Sacramento River and I are in!  Friendly reminder:  the 49ers visit the O.Co on December 7!)

*Hey Golden Domers, the Irish coming do Palo Alto in the Fall of 2015--you may want to plan ahead! The Cardinal host the Ducks, Irish, and Cal next season if college football is your kind of thing!

*Of all the teams in the MLB that scare me, those pesky Anaheim Angel$ worry me.  If the Halos open the vault and acquire a front line pitcher, I'm just saying.....

*The Giants snapped their streak in Arizona last night, allowing Giants fans to enjoy the soccer match today.  The NL West is clearly a 2-horse race between the Kill-Joys and the New Evil Empire.  Will the Dodgers seek reinforcements?  If the polish fades from Michael Morse's new-found glow, will the Giants look for a bat, or what about a second basemen.  Stay tuned!

*(PSST:  Here is hoping Billy B goes all in for a starting pitcher!)

*CenCalians, if you haven't checkout Rawhide Ballpark in Visalia yet, July a good month!  Good times, easy on the wallet, lots of future big leaguers. Grab a boot mug and a cowbell!  Good times--tell 'em the Fonz sent you!

*My new favorite name: Bastian Schweinsteiger!  (Shh-vine-staager!).  I love it, absolutely love it! The Nigerian uniforms are the coolest, but my man is Schweinsteiger!

*To the parents of Lucy Li: whatever you are doing with your little girl, keep it up!  Her enthusiasm and attitude endearing. I look forward to the future, and watching L Squared on Sundays!

To a great day everyone!  Linguica and Port Wine for everyone!

Throw-Enis Launches Dad Friendly Sports Weekend--Memories Included

*Grooving in the Get Down Lounge on Father's Day Friday:

*Yoenis, or should I say, Throw-enis.  How can I guy, look so bad, then look soooooooooo good! The Cuban Missile launcher is Puig--without all the drama.  Yo-Yo is one of those special talents I recommend keeping an eye on.  I have a feeling he is a love able clown, who can be extremely frustrating!

*The time is now ladies-->if there was ever a window to purchase the man in your life a new 55-inch flat screen TV, it is NOW.  U.S. Open Golf all weekend, along with the World Cup, and with the NBA & NHL Finals underway:  Just Do It Gals, Just Do It!  Did I mention the Swinging A's and those Gritty Giants maintaining their leads atop the MLB Leader Boards? The signings of Kazmir and Hudson, looking pretty good right about now!

(**The original Evil Empire visiting the O.Co this weekend; while AT&T hosting the Rocks.  Saturday a Bay Double-Dip opportunity by the way.)

*Pinstripe Nation will be out in full force this weekend to pay their final respects to Derek Jeter.  To East Bay Sports fans, well, it just "ain't no big thing."  Jeter, Franco Harris, Kirk Gibson, Tom Brady--all are etched in our minds forever, and not in a good way!  AARRGH!

*I am kicking off this paternal weekend with some quality time with my 11-year old daughter. On the itinerary:  Cinnaholic in Berkeley ( as seen on the television "Shark Tank"), followed by a trip to American Girl over near Stanford. You know how I like to Double Dip!! (If this is your first time reading, please see the three previous posts!)

*The World Cup started with a bang.  Host Brazil knocking it around the pitch in front of a jazzed up crowd.  Oh those officials!?!  Brazil the recipient of an extremely, questionable, call.  While "Fred" was grabbed near the goal, his flop would have brought a tear to the eye of the All-Time flopper, Vlade Divac!  Croatians not exactly feeling that Brazilian love!  Team USA kicks off on Monday, against their old nemesis Ghana.  Also Monday, the key math of the Muerte Groupo (Group F) has Christiano Renaldo and his comrades squaring off against Germany. If the Americans can somehow get by Ghana, Cup fever could get a super-charged boost here in the US.   Mexico kicks off against Cameroon in a couple of hours, with the Netherlands and defending champions Spain to follow.

*I am pulling for a Brazil-Spain final as I tweeted yesterday.  I would love to see that Old Europe vs New World match up!  Portgual vs. Uraguay would be OK too?  A Mexico/Portugal Final would be delicious--now that's one Mexagee Party I do not want to miss!

*How about in 2018, King Bron Bron plays for the US Soccer team--put him in the goal. King leads US Soccer, come on now, think about it?  Sure, give Capernick a jersey too.  If the USA's best athletes were on the pitch, well....

*Speaking of the King--he is finally starting to look, well, not like a young guy!  He could be a little wore down.....something deep in pancreas tells me however, that the NBA and NHL finals' aren't quite over.  I am not quite ready to pronounce the Rangers and Heat as Champions, I am just saying, it ain't over. Yet.  I won't even mention my good luck NYR (that's New York Rangers for you outdoor types) that has completely flipped the momentum of series around.  I am just saying....also I am a tad cynical, and I am thinking of making a Tahoe run, just to bet on Heat-Spurs three in 2015.  The Heat will add Melo, and the Spurts somebody we have never heard of who is a great team basketball player.  By the way, when you hear or see the word team player, it simply means the following:  a player who passes the ball.

*Look for a player who has never captured the U.S. Open (Golf) to lift the cup on Sunday. Saturday always the day to watch the leader board.  By the way, the actual Leaderboard, does it get any cooler than that? Can you imagine your name on the top--in red (under par).  The image to me dreams are made of.  The name I am calling: Jordan Spieth.  Great bit on ESPN and Andy North on who will win the Open--fantastic bit actually!

*I was blessed and fortunate to walk the hallowed grounds of the US Open Golf in 2012 (The Olympic Club in San Francisco), and the US Open tennis in 2013. Both experiences for me, mystical AND magical.
Walking on the same grounds where the greatest of all time performed their feats of excellence, well, simply awe inspiring.  My fondest US Open Golf Moment: the anticipation of waiting for Tiger, Phil, and Bubba to walk down the 9th fairway at the Olympic Club.  Then, the bewilderment of watching Phil walk back to the tee box.  You diehards may recall, Phil lost his balls--in the trees apparently--and carted back up to the tee box to hit another drive! Eventually, these three larger-than-life figures strolled up to the green....gnarly.  Wicked Cool.  It was a great day!

**One of the coolest memories of that day (no not parking at Candlestick because there was a fire at a BART station, forcing to me to drive in the city); at the end of they day, I stayed at my parents house in the Big I (Isleton, CA!). As we were watching the highlights of the day, I recall sharing with my parents, what I had witnessed that day.  I recall vividly how engaged my parents were in my stories--I was still intoxicated from first Open experience--and was babbling on and on and on.  (You all know I can babble now!) However, they both listened intently--heck, I wasn't sure my parents really even liked golf?!  There was something about the way they listened....it was like they were there with me.  That day in particular very transcendent.....heck perhaps they were just tired, and were listening quietly, however it didn't feel that way. Mystical. Magical.

To all those of who played in US Opens and World Cups future and past, I raise my glass to you. To all fathers everywhere, a special toast for you.  To my father, well, dad, you just keep right on looking over my shoulder!

Happy Father's Day!

P.S.:  Derek Carr #4 Raider jersays not yet being produced on a national scale.  One less gift item ladies--as least this year!

Part III. The Triple Crown

**From the Get Down Lounge on an awesome, spectacular Saturday Afternoon!

Two hours plus until Chrome takes the stage at the Belmont.  Can the Coalinga Kid pull through?  Wicked on the outside and Commanding Curve make me nervous--Curve especially after that second place finish at the Derby.  Here's hoping Chrome saved the best for last in that million dollar tank of his!  The streak ends today Chrome--bring him home Victor Espinoza!

NHL finals and NBA finals opened with great game 1's.  Lost of drama still to come?  If the Spurs will in all in 2014--will the real finals be next Spring, 2015?  Can the LA Kings play from ahead?  If they follow their script, they will lose the next three games.  I am feeling this series hard core, as my New York Rangers gear just arrived!  LGR (Which sound a lot like Let's Go Oakland!), bam, bam, bam-bam-bam!

Tennis anyone?  Great drama this morning as my-gal Maria held on in a 3-set battle in Paris this morning.  Next up tomorrow morning: Rafa vs. Jokovich.  Although Fed is my-guy, tomorrow morning's battle should be epic.  Rafa just doesn't lose on clay, and Jokovich might be the only player on the world who moves as well as Rafa.  As the great Dick Einberg would say, "Oh My!"

The Lancaster Jethawks are the most talented High Single A team to visit Rawhide Ballpark this season.  Houston Astros fans--hope is alive!

Part III. Our Double Dip, the Final Leg.

So as we leave SF heading to the O.Co, we are making good time.  My original thinking was that if we left the park by 3:15 we could beat some of the traffic.  Well, in true Portuguese style, we left our seats just after 3:45.  No bueno.  We were rolling along until the San Mateo Bridge.  AARRGH!  Where Highway 101 connects with the span to bridge, bumper to bumper.  The key to an enjoyable ride--good company--with my Big Brother and Sister-in-Law in tow, we were in for an enjoyable ride!  (You may have to ask them their opinion!?!)

After a quick bite at In-and-Out (once again this menu very agreeable with 9-year old set!) we slide right into the O.Co parking lot at just about 6:15.  Not bad, not bad at all.   The weather is slightly warmer than normal for Oakland--for a night game, he temperature is perfect!  After a couple of minutes of horsing around tailgate style, we head in.  The Big Bro--he was a great sport--he heads home on BART.

The trek from AT&T to the O.Co, well it's a bit of time warp.  Like going from the 5-star romantic restaurant to your favorite diner.  (For you NorCalians, like going from brunch at Meadowwood Spa in Napa Valley to dinner at Al The Wop's in Walnut Grove.) Both places wonderful, the packaging and ambiance however, just a leetle different.

The O.Co is/was/most likely will always be my home away from home.  If you watch the DVD of Moneyball, one of the special features takes a behind-the-scene look at the Coli. It will make you say "oohh" and your eyes will water. Walking in on this May 28 my mind is flooded with numerous memories over the past 45 years or so-recollections of great times and great people, here on this sacred ground.  It felt as if the spirit of Charlie O Finley an Mr. Al Davis were escorting us in the park.  While this stadium has taken a lot of crap over the years--and spit some back up--I would contend the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum has hosted more big games than any ballpark current in use.  (The Stick is Close, but remember, the recent Giants success has taken place in the House that Bonds Built.)  AFC Championship games, MLB playoff games, and or course, World Series titles in 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1989. I can't help feel in my bones, it would be poetic justice, for the old gal to have at least one more day in the sun, hosting the Fall Classic.

Tonight's game features the Killing-Me-Lately Detroit Tigers.  Outside of the Seahawks-49ers, I am not sure how many sincere "rivalries" exist these days.  The Tigers however, really burn me.  The last three post season series the A's have been a part of, have all ended with the Tigers celebrating on the field.  It's been a long time--1972 to be exact--when Reggie stole him to help propel the Green and Gold into the World Series. Justin Verlander (The Verbeast), all I can say is AARRGH!

For the evening game, we have good seats--row 3, just behind the A's bullpen.  Reliever Fernando Rodriquez is kind enough to sign a an autograph and personalize it for Noah.  Even though Fernando recently was optioned to Sacramento, he is now my favorite reliever....well maybe #2, right behind Sean Doolittle! We were sitting so close to the field, it feels like we are below the level of the playing field--apparently the playing field at the O.Co is below sea level, and well, it felt like it!

The games is a douzy.  Annibal Sanchez versus Scott Kazmir--great pitching matchup.  The A's don't have a hit through 4 innings, and it dons on me, is this the day I finally witness a no-hitter?  Nope, A's single in the fifth....and this game is sailing right along.  Either team sprays few balls in the crowd. The Tigers have some near miss homers in our corner--Cabrera crushed one--just foul!  We head to the bottom of the ninth, with the Tigers in front, 1-0.

Fortunately for us, we have a pair of great sports fans with us.  He may just be the winningest California Community College Basketball Coach of all time; his wife, a hard core, Philadelphia-type sports fan.  The two of them pure joy to experience a ballgame with, and they single handily keep Noah in good spirits and having a good time. (One day, when I post some pictures, you will be able to see for yourself.)

Funny Guy-Moment:  At one point, after a questionable call, the fans around us start chanting BS, BS. After a while of hearing this, Noah realizes what they are chanting, and this big sneaky grin encompasses his grill. I just ignored it--part of my sweating his mother is going to hear about it;  part of me delighted at his amusement.

The A's rally in the bottom of the ninth.  With the help of a Tiger miscue, the A's have first and third with one out.  Sanchez is pulled in favor of long-time A's killer Joe Nathan.  At the plate for the good guys, Josh Donaldson.  I am hoping for a sacrifice fly, merely to extend the day. Obviously, a game-ending double play is also in order.  The A's insert their fastest baserunner at first base, Craig Gentry.  A steal would take care of the double play possibility, and also mean a single coule win it!  All of sudden we have some real, excitable drama.

Funny Guy-Moment #2: Nathan is stepping off, throwing over, you know, driving A's fans crazy.  As the heckling begins, I tell Noah, you can yell: "Pitch the ball Charlie Brown."  Like a wet blanket, he is all over that one!  Once again, same cheezey, I am getting over on somebody grill brightens his face. The kid now how has something he craves, serious ammunition!

First pitch to Donaldson....and he crushes it high and far down the left-field line. From where we are sitting, initially it looks like it might be headed foul. I am certain Charlie O and my father help blow it fair, and it lands in the left field stands--A Walk Off home run!  Take that Detroit, Happy Birthday Noah! A's win 3-1!

As we are leaving--Noah concerned about the cargo in the trunk--Noah casually mentions that his Grandpa would have enjoyed today.  I have a feeling the little freckle said that for my benefit, but it dad warm my pancreas.  My father would have complained and griped about such a trip--I do believe, much like Noah stated, he would have enjoyed the day!

On the way home we stop by one of our--well one of mine anyway--favorite restaurants.  Yes sirree, Nation's Hamburgers.  We grab a Chocolate Cream Pie to share with Noah's Sister and Mother, and we are headed home.

Ideally May 28, 2014 will be a day forever eched in my little comedian's memory.  I can only hope in the years to come, perhaps on his own son's 9th birthday, he can carry on the birthday tradition in a way he deems best fit.

Noah, I raise my Big Root Beer to you Son, I hope you had a good day!

(PSST--Time to watch CA Chrome at the Belmont!)

May 28--The Deuce; The Near No-No and the Train Shop!

Part II.  Bay Area Double-Dip

*Sac State Hornets taking on ASU today in San Luis Opispo (CA)--Feel the Sting!
*Bron Bron in the finals--again!  Looking back, he called it!
*Who will face the New York Rangers?  Chicago or LA?  Hey I am a NORCAL guy, plus
NYC and Chitown both cold weather puck and stick kind of cities!
*Speaking of a buzz, Chrome worked out on the track today.  A week to go, "and they're off."
*More of a murmur surrounding the Cup Del Mundo--the biggest stir so far, was the news of
who didn't make the team.  Oh well, it's a start!
*When did the Indy 500 cease to run on Memorial Day--Did I miss something?
*The Visalia Rawhide with a textbook come-from-behind 4-3 win last night, decked out in
teal aqua jerseys.  Similar to their park, and overall vibe, very cool man, very cool!

May 28, the Double-Dip, part 2:

The 10-under demographic loves the Golden Arches, therefore we began the day with their Cinnamon Melts. Pure gas (sugar) as I often say--tasty, very tasty, and the kid, actually both of my offspring, LOVE them in a lick the box dry kind of way!

Heading East on Highway 152, near Los Banos, it's windy.  I mean Rio Vista CA hills kind of windy! (Extremely windy--Wizard of Oz style!)  Dirt is flying across the road, the car is bouncing, even dirt is flying.  This won't be the first time today I think of my childhood today.

Next on the itinerary, a visit to the "Train Shop" in San Jose.  Located just off of freeways 280 and 17 in San Jose (near the SJ airport and Santa Clara U, and just up the street from the Winchester Mystery House), this shop is a must visit for all train enthusiasts. I am in over my head here, so the natural thing to do is to overspend.  The box was so long, it barely fit into the trunk of our Volkswagen Passat!  The Bachman, HO scale, "Overland Limited" set a big hit to start the day. Memories here people, trying to create and etch everlasting memories.

Onto SF, the is kid in the back beaming.  (Did I mention the locomotive pumps out real steam? A real bonus--of course I knew this beforehand!)  Sailing along 280, on a gorgeous sunny afternoon, we make good time. We are going to make the second inning, hopefully?!? I am a tad nervous about the traffic in the city--however the stars are aligned as we sail in off of third street, right near the park.  I expected to pay a few bones, and I was right $35 big ones.  Wow!  The budget again takes a hit!

As any kill-joy Giant fan will tell you, AT&T a joyous spectacle. True. The water, the statues, the humm baby of the crowd....very hip. Noah gets his picture taken with a cutie of Cubs fan--hey it is the kid's birthday remember--and we are feeling good.  I see a gentlemen wearing an old SF Seals jersey, and it reminds Sal Taromina, a friend of my dad's, and longtime coach at Santa Clara U who played in the original coast league.  Sal used to come pheasant hunting with my father years ago.  It seems like this day meant for fathers and sons.

We had in our possession club level outfield tickets.  Not necessarily expensive, but not necessarily the cheap seats. My children have grown up often times sitting near Bob Ueker in the "not-so-front row", so Noah is juiced.   He enjoys the escalator rides, especially the one with containing the neon lighting, creating a nightclub feel.  The club level is spiffy, including all kinds of food and drink, and statues of Lucy, Charlie Brown, and Snoopy.  We love the Peanuts. Good times! (Die-hard Giants fans, lots of great artifacts to check out in the Club Level.  The Ghilardeli ice cream stand a must!)

Our seats are good. Second row in the second level, down the left field line.  The view is better. Looking west, the bay is off in the horizon behind the wonderfully aesthetic-looking yard. The company, nails.  The only issue, we are in direct sunlight, and with a sugar-hyped 9 year old early in a long day, I am on alert. Popcorn, H2O, pizza, H20, ice cream, and what do you know, we survive.

Around the 5th inning I realize there is a game being played. Linecum has a no-no through 5!  The Cubs, with their B-Listers, are perfect fodder!  I have never seen a no-hitter live, any where, any place.  Shoot, now I am getting excited.  Then the Big Fella, and I do mean BIG FELLA, takes Lincecum out.  Are you kidding me?  His pitch count was over 90, apparently, so the Abe Lincoln looking-like manager pulls Timmy. Nooooooooooo.  Oh well, it was only a matter of time, and in the seventh the Cubs scratch out a hit--AARRGHH!  The Giants eventually pull away for a crisp, clean, oh what could have been kind of day. Thanks Boch, thanks a lot.  It is no wonder--with Captain Kill Joy as the their leader--The Giants haven's signed the lovable, personable Panda. I digress....

The Giants have the mojo.  You could just feel it.  They are playing well, and they ooze a confident, "we have got it" type of vibe.  Kill-joys are in for a fun summer.  The size of the Jumbo Screens JUMP out at you.  The screen in center, it is Bochy like, HUGE.  AT&T is indeed a destination attraction, and an enjoyable place to spend an afternoon.

Final thought from the afternoon--the replay situation has to be modified.  The Giants were up 4-0 and on a bang bang play at third, the umps proceed to review.  Snooze. Double Snooze.  We should have left then, and beat the traffic, but that's another story.

My big brother and sister in-law who wisely rode BART, join us for the sojourn over to Oaktown.  They are good sports.

Two tips for would be Double Dippers:

1.  Stay the night ahead of time in a Bay Area hotel.  I also am in favor of a pool--you just never know!
2.  Take BART trains (Bay Area Rapid Transit);  now I had a 9-year old hunkered down in the back seat, with some serious cargo in the back, so from our point of view, everything was just fine.  (Our guests, well, like I said, they were good sports!)  Nice afternoon, and down the backstretch to Oakland here we go!

We are going extra innings....Part III. to come in the next 48 hours!

May 28, Part I. One Swell, Baylicious Humpday!

Part I.  The Bay Double-Dip

Sports fans' taste buds absolutely on fire with all the great events taking place currently:  NHL and NBA semi-finals, baseball is rolling along (hello there Blue Jay Fans), the Chrome Crown is building, and even the World Cup fright around the corner!  The French Open is underway and the Men's US Open Golf Tournament is short Par 4 away. (Visalia Rawhide are home this weekend too--busting out Teal jerseys on Friday!)

May 28 will always be a special day.  In 2005, my son Noah joined the human race, in very dramatic fashion.  Noah's dropping heart rate minutes before birth the longest 2-3 minutes of my life....he is becoming one heck of sports nut!

Nine years later in 2014 the tantalizing opportunity to take in an A's and Giants game on Noah's Birthday (or Cubs game, as I loving say to all the followers who love to hang out over near McCovey Cove) simply too enticing!  Perhaps most importantly, on this May 28, we could create a special, "memory forever etched deep in the brain kind of day."

I have to got to give credit to my childhood chum Old Man Sacramento River for planting the idea in my cranium.   River, is one of a rather large group of older guys who grew up in my neighborhood of Iselton CA, that loved sports, and looked after me.  River is a little confused-he likes the SF Giants and the Raiders-but hey, it is what it is.  Anyway, he recalled fondly how he took his son to the Double Dip years ago, and how later his son recalled the day.  Hmmm, very cool.  Then, my dear college friend, a Bay Area Native, also shared his tale of the Dip--I was hooked. This same gentleman, he's a Big Time A.D. well this who single handedly flung open the world of writing, and sports writing into my soul. He also is why I carry a soulfull appreciation and love for copy editors!

Thus, with the Cool Aid of "two games in one day" down, I was all in.  The next step was to convince the Spouse to allow our young tike to miss the last day of school. (I believed this to be the cake topper, man style!)  My dear spouse, well, she is a gamer, (loves the big games too!) recognized the moment, and approved.  I could see in her eyes, she knew this year trip meant a little more...my father's health was failing at the time...and well, the O.Co, the Coliseum as I like to call her....she appears to be on her last legs too. Many dear memories at the Coli, and May 28 looked like too a good a hanging curve to pass up.
My chic, hip, 70's cool farmer big brother likes the Gigantes and I anticipated I could lasso he and my delightful sister-in-law in for part of the trip.  My original game plan called for their participation of 50%, well it ended up closer to 66%!  With a couple of other zany A's fans on the hook (a future hall-of-fame hoop coach and his passionate Philly style sports fan spouse!) the trip was coming together like a Billy Beane off season.

There was a little work to do as we live in the Central Valley, just down the road from where the Carr brothers and Trent Dilfer her tossed the pigskin about.  I needed to make this day special for my son, to hit one on the screws!  Typically my Portuguese/Euro "Does anybody really know what time it is "roots come into play, as do my, oh let's just say fondness for the 24th hour decision, and last second audible! Another go to pal, a real New Yorker--Go Rangers-once told me I like to schedule 72 hours of activities in a single day.
Slightly overbooked, it was go time!

Part II. coming soon, let's say withing 24 hours. Well what do you know, a real tease......

Angels and Soccer--Oh Nelly! College Baseball too, and My Man SpeBo!

*Parting shots for the weekend......

*The A's have are pretty hot--winning 10 of their last 12.  The bullpen has been a little shaky, but you can't win them all?  The schedule gets tough in the next couple of weeks with the Jays, Tiger, Yankees, and Orioles on the horizon.  Guess who is flying under the radar?  Yes, those pesky Angels of Anaheim.  If their pitching hangs in there.....so will the Angels!  A's have been rolling but only lead Trout & Weaver by 3.5 games.  (Of course if somehow the Angels could knock off the Tigers in Round 1 of the playoffs, maybe the A's and Halos could play for passage to the World Series?  Just more CA dreaming.....)

*The Giants depth will be tested now that Cain and Casilla have gotten the injury bug.  Will the Giants open up those deep pockets to add reinforecments?  Has Marco....Scutaro....tried a little of the cream and the clear--that should cure his ailing back!

*US Men's World Cup coach Jurgen Klinsman leaves is sending a message to American Soccer--either you're all in or you not!  Donovan missed qualifying games......I like the move, I like it a lot! I have two rule changes to help increase the popularity of the the game on the pitch in the US:
          1.  Anytime a goal receives the ball from his own team--corner kick for the opponent.  This will help eliminate some of the goal-killing, icing of the ball.
          2.  Eliminate the offsides rule.
These rules--the Fonz's rules lets call them-would open up the game ever so slightly.

*Rangers vs Kings in the NHL final--good old East vs West rivalry!  In the NBA, while I still think the Pacers have a chance to sneak in there..it looks like a repeat of last years final:  Bron Bron vs Pops Old-Schoolers.

*Lots of college baseball this weekend--those Sac State Hornets, took it on on chin last night to the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield.  I envision they will bounce back to day in WAC tournament.  Also, my pops' Santa Clara Broncos took it on the chin in the West Coast Conference tourny.  Still alive....and the Bulldogs of Fresno State gunning for another magical run in the Mountain West Tournament.  Drama, drama, drama....

*Have yet to see any Silver and Black #4 Jerseys, but my son is getting one!  (Anyone else want one?)

*Chrome just chilling in NYC now...just 2 plus weeks until the Big Day.  The Belmont is allowing Chrome to wear his nose strips--and, honestly, how could they not!

*Speaking of my offspring, he is set to be 9 next Wednesday--taking him to Cubs and Giants in the afternoon, A's and Tigers in the evening.  A Bay Slam--filled with plenty of Big Root Beers naturally!

*Visalia Rawhide on the road this week; keep in mind park is great, and the promotions even better.  Fun-filled, actioned pack at Rawhide Ballpark!

Today I lift my Big Root Beer:  to my man Spencer Boling, who captured the Fresno Area High Jump Championship last week.  SpeBo is the man, clearing 5-7.  Way to go SpeBo!

To Chrome, Hornets, and even a little Football!

*Now that Summer is just about here, let's take it around the diamond!

*On the Hill:  California Chome Baby!  Two for two with his impressive win in the Preakness.  Now it's off to NYC, and as any California youngster knows, you have made it to the top, when you can be a star in New York.  Hopefully all of this nasal strip nonsense will simply fade away--just like Chrome's opponents. What a great race he and jockey Victor Espinoza ran Saturday.  The Belmont however, with that long track, will certainly be a test for the ages.  What is up with horses skipping the Preakness, then running in the Belmont?  Either your in or out, that's what I say!  Great, great article in the Fresno Bee by David White in Sunday May 18's paper.  DW's slant is slightly CenCalian, however it is a great read.  It's like this talented writer saw into my horse racing soul! (Reminder: if the Triple Crown doesn't interest you or your little ones, rent Secretariat, it might just help set the mood?!?)

*Catching:  The NBA and NHL are down to their sports Final Four's.  If you love hockey or hoop, this is your time!  Keep an eye on those Pacers, and those pesky New York Rangers!

*First Base:  I am very surprised at all the "chatter" regarding the possibility of another Bay Bridge World Series. Both teams are hot, and I mean when you look around, are there any teams outside of the Bay that are flat out scary?  It's the same cast of characters isn't it:  Tigers and Angels in the AL, Cards and Dodgers in the NL.  I will hold judgment on the Brewers until July 4!  The problem for the A's is those darned short 5 games series you need stars--Sonny Gray perhaps, maybe? I hope Billy B goes all in and lands a front line pitcher and maybe a little athleticism up the middle.  Time to win that last game of the year Mr. B!  The Giants have the stars--the question, do they have enough juice to get there? Buster isn't the only one who needs to stay healthy--so does Angel Pagan!

*Second:  Oakland fans are always taking a gut punch. Now the Sacramento River Cats say the would like to have Giants instead. Wow, Sacramento used to be my favorite city.  Of course if that happens, the A's would just slide back into Fresno, and perhaps it is just a good old fashion bargaining ploy, but man oh man, that's a sucker punch.

*At Short:  Speaking of Sacramento, how about those WAC Champions Sac State Hornets. The Hornets feature Sam Long, whose Dad played hoop for me years ago.  Yes sir Trent Long, one of the coolest cats of all-time in my book, and now he's gushing with pride over the success of his left-handed pitching ace of a son.  They need to win the conference tournament first....but here's hoping Omaha is in the Longs' future travel plans! Feel the Sting Baby! (The Hornets are Green and Gold in case you were wondering!) Way back when my father was friends with the coach at Santa Clara U., a great gentlement by the name of Sal Taromina.  Thus, I will be keeping my eye on the Broncos as they compete in the West Coast Conference in Stockton!

*Third: Speaking of the Giants, I took in a couple of their Advance A minor league team, the San Jose Giants(I know just more irony). To begin with, the Ballpark in Visalia perhaps the best venue in California to catch a game.  Yep.  Well the Giants have sported some very bright orange hats which made me think--man would Brian Wilson have loved these to go with his funky orange shoes!  Not sure if anyone else would like them, but hey let's move on....

*On deck:  The Cup Del Mundo.  Yes sir, the Cup is right around the corner.  Can the Americans rally from the group of death? Nah, I don't think so....but it does seem like the "program" is headed in the right direction.  Another excellent article--this one in the San Francisco Chronicle by Ann Killian, talks of the transformation taking place under the leadership of Jurgen Klinsman.  I even watched some exciting, English Soccer in the FA Cup--heck, the news is that I now know what the FA Cup is!  Santi Corzola's goal from a free kick--stellar.  Talk about a small window, ish.  My Portuguese genetic code must have been inspired--I am just saying maybe there is hope that Soccer will indeed be a household item one day in the old U.S. of A!

California Dreaming

*From the Get Down Lounge...a little late, or early!

*Anyone considering a road trip--check that--the road trip, to see California Chrome go for the Triple Crown in New York after he wins the Preakness tomorrow?  Oh sure he could get out of gate slow, and yes there are some speed horses....but with only 9 horses entered in the field, CA Chrome is good to go.  What is up with horses coming in and out of the triple crown races?  It looks to me like the Chrome's competition waiting for he Belmont.  Oh well, quite a story for this stud from Coaling Station A (that's Coalinga for you non Californians!).  And their off....

*Fifty years ago they broke ground on the O.Co;  40 years ago the old gal hosted the I-5 Series; 25 years ago it was the Bay Bridge Series;  I would think the formerly named Oakland-Alameda Coliseum deserves one more shining moment in the sun?  Maybe Sonny Gray is just the man to bring it home?  The four best records in the bigs as of today:   The Tigers, Brewers, Giants and A's!

*Why does Oakland in general receive such little love and respect?  When people speak of the great baseball teams, the Big Red Machine sure gets tons of love for their two titles in the 70's.  Ironic--don't you think--the Red's lost to the Swinging A's in 1972.   I believe people don't want to acknowledge the late Charlie O was the greatest owner the last 50 years!

*Well, well, well, even the NFL draft gives Oakland football fans some hope.  Not many people had Khalil Mack falling to the 5th spot--and because the Texans weren't going to experience another Carr saga, Derek Carr ends up a Raider.  Wow.  CenCal is strong Raider territory, and it just experienced a kick start.  There will definitely be some Red Wavers (Fresno State followers) making the trek to Otown.  Funny, it wasn't that long ago that Singletary led Niners were not very good....like I mentioned above, doesn't the O.Co deserve a few more glorious memories?  December 7 should be fun--crazy--but fun!  On that day the Niners cross the Bay!

*Winner of Day 1 of the NFL draft--I had the Rams, taking a mammoth offensive lineman, than grabbing the best defensive lineman on the board.  Day 2 and 3, well, it looked to my like the Texans did OK for themselves. The Browns, or the Johny Browns?  I just don't see it--and Bortles was a surprise coming off the Board at #3.

*The W's....man, E Gods as my father would say.  Steve Kerr, man was he loved at Arizona, and has had a great career.  Why in the world would he want to leave his job as an NBA analyst to coach?  This just looks and smells baaaaddddd.  The owner and GM have already thrown the previous GM, Larry Riley, along with Coach Jackson, in front of the Bart train.  As I like to say, if it winning was that easy in pro sports, then why can't the Cubs hoist the trophy--speaking of the Cubbies, I would love to see former Golden Domer Jeff Samargia end up with the A's for the stretch run!!

*One Larry Riley story.   The man is a gentleman an a basketball lifer.  I once met him at a junior college basketball game in California--he was one of about 50 people in the stands--totally unnoticed, just blending in the crowd.  Seems to me like the Warriors are paying it backwards!

*Sharks fans, man, I empathize.  Ish.  Well, the World Cup is near, and after all, aren't Hockey and Soccer similar sports?  Roll, roll, Port-u-gal!!

*By the way, if the A's can't move, why don't the Raiders move to San Jose?  I'm just saying....

*To Derek Carr and Josh Reddick I raise my glass.  To Carr, because he represents hope--to Red Dog as I like to call him, for having the fortitude to use any Wham tune as a walk up song in Oakland.  See Derek, good times often come from places you just don't see coming!  Maybe Careless Whispers will be the O.Co's swan song?  (By the way Red Dog went off tonight in Cleveland!)

*Visalia Rawhide won for the 7th time in a row this evening--if you live in the area, and enjoy baseball, you really owe it to yourself to check out Rawhide Ballpark. You will not be disappointed, in fact I would wager 3-5 you will be back!

**Don't forget to follow twitter:   100percent3G!

*My man Timmy C in GTown Mass, I hope you had a great Birthday--your present will be in the mail next week.

Draft Day....and Really W's, Really?

*Before we get to the NFL draft, a few tidbits.....

*California Chrome, yesiree--I am on the bandwagon!  I have been using the term "DA" as a sign of affection for years, so for the Chrome's stable to use that moniker--well priceless!

*The Warriors.  Really?  Joe Lacob and Bob Myers have now pushed aside the former GM Larry Riley, and now Coach Jackson. Riley was thrown under the bus, despite his assistance in putting the Warriors together, and Jackson, well, unbelievable.  If Bogut had stayed healthy, the W's would be flying home from Oklahoma City today!  I am sure after the Warriors win the title in 2015, they will then lead the Cubs, Falcons, and Sharks to major league titles!

*A's fans feeling more than their fare of share this early season--despite a record of 20-15, the A's are only 7-9 at home.  Booing has been heard in the O.Co, in particular towards Jim Johnson and Daric "Mr. Angst" Barton.  Despite their winning record, the A's bullpen has already amassed 7 blown saves--this team could have 25 wins, easily!  Expectations are indeed running high in the former Oakland Alameda County Coliseum.  (We will address their team issues in later posts!)

*If you haven't seen the Visalia Rawhide play yet, well, here is another quirky reason (besides it being "Thirsty Thursday", which means $1 beers and sodas from 6-8 p.m!), on Monday, the Stockton Ports (A's) and the Hide combined for an 0-20 at the plate with men in scoring position.  That is hard to accomplish--that game also featured a routine 9-4-6-2 putout.  If you like sandlot games, you need to check out Vtown!

*The NFL draft--as my spouse reasoned before our two children were born--there simply aren't too many surprises in life.  Well.....dear you were correct!  Naturally, I see the NFL draft the same way, I mean, all of these future pros, don't know yet where they will call home.  Unfortunately, the Raiders have been drafting high--very high--the past 10 years, so ideally, that will change in 2015!  Thus, for all off you draft pundits, here is my mock draft:
#1. Texans, DE Clowney from South Carolina.  Texans stay with the Freak!
#2. Rams, ILB Mack from Buffalo.  (Rams need D in the mighty NFC West!)
#3. Jaquars, WR Watkins. Jags get Big-Time play maker!
#4. Browns--like the Jags-and the Raiders would love to trade down.  However, for the sake our drill
           Browns take OL Greg Robinson.
#5. Raiders--need to get better in the trenches--although they may be tempted by WR Mike Evans or
DT Aaron Donald from Pitt.  It's Matthews from A&M or Lewan from Michigan.  I say
           Matthews.
**If you like QB's, I see a fall, then a flury, in fact a tight end may come off the board before a QB!

Sit back and enjoy as the draft now last 3 days--the spouse fyi, can't believe it!

*Today I raise the glass to Coach Jackson--it has been a longggggg time since the W's made back-to-back playoffs, and I fear, it may be long time until they repeat this feat!

On Patriot's Day

*From the Monday Morning QB......

*The eyes and the hearts of our country are following today's events surrounding Patriot's Day in Boston.  I for one find that 11:00 a.m. Red Sox game time to be particularly cool!  If MLB would schedule the A's in Beantown on this historical day, I can envision a road trip!  Today we move up our toast to the top, and raise our morning coffee to all involved with the Boston Marathon:  To a great day people!

*A's and Brewers sporting the best records in the majors thus far--I mean everyone saw that coming, huh? Is it a better "play" to forecast the not-so-efficient teams? Currently toting a not-so-whopping 5 wins in the bigs, the Cubs, Padres, and Diamondbacks.  Man, I can only imagine what Cubs fans endure?  Ish.

*Once again the A's have locked up another key piece of their roster for multiple years.  The latest, Dr. Doo Sean Doolittle.  Doo basically is a one-man PR machine for the club with his twitter tweets, and his many positive off-the-field activated.  On the field the powerful lefty has been stellar in the pen, and his name is consistently mentioned as the closer-for-the-future.  Along with Coco Crisp, it appears the A's have a fan-friendly strategy of maintaining integral players who like being in Oakland.  Doolittle's story with the franchise sincerely a feel good one--of course a world series championship with Dr. Doo finishing on the hill--that would make the ideal ending!

*With all of the riveting postseason hockey and hoop under way, the Warriors and Clippers series tonight in Game 2 takes center stage.  Can the W's pull of another upset down in SoCal?  Time and time this season, Mark Jackson's team has risen to the occasion on the road--can they continue the trend?  Keep on eye on Blake Griffin tonight.  On Saturday BG's foul issues greatly hampered his team.  (His does flail his hands around quite a bit!)  LA decided to smother Curry, and that strategy was affective as Curry was kept to a cool 14 team.  Stay tuned.  Griffin's accidental "pouring of" water on a Warrior's fan--that only adds to the drama of this good old fashion rivalry type of game!

*LeBron and the Heat warming up.....would another title for King James escalate him towards the top in the Rare Air category?

*How about those Sharks, down 2-0 on Sunday, and completely flip the ice around, pouring in 7 consecutive goals in their 7-2 win.  Impressive, very impressive.

*Adding to the NorCal vs. SoCal week, the Gigantes traveled to lovely San Diego over the weekend.
While the Padres took two of three, Buster and Timmy were large as the Giants knocked off the Padres 4-3.  Lincecum's career, his persona, I see a book there.  Timmy lets get together--we can talk about that stache of yours!  Man the Gigos must be sour on Panda, because, well, how can you just not love the big fella?!?

*Rawhide Rant:  Over in Visalia over the weekend, the Hide strung together back-back-back to come-from-behind wins.  Saturday was the topper, as a 6-run bottom of the sixth wiped out an 8-2 victory on the way to a 9-8 win.  The Hide are on a roll winning 7 of 8, and if you like fireworks, well then you CenCalians might want to head over to Rawhide park Friday evening (April 26).  Closer Jimmy Sherfy--I love that name--5 for 5 on save opportunities.  The way the parent DBacks are playing, Sherf could be moving up the chain soon!

*Reminder:  check out our tweets at 100percent3G!

Good Friday...Is this Possibly the Silver Age?

*And a good Good Friday to you and yours......

*Is the Silver Age of Bay Area Professional Sports?  There has been plenty to cheer about in recent years, not many titles--excluding the Giants--but a whole lot of knocking on the door!  Know, it the Sharks, or Wub's can somehow, someway manage to hoist a cup, well then, ....second thought, let's just wait and see what happens!

*This is of course the Silver Anniversary of the Bay Bride Series!  The A's have a very good record thus far, despite, or DESPITE, very slopping defense and base running!  There have been a few hiccups closing games as well.  Pitching and the long ball carrying this club right now.  I know, I know it's early.  The Giants look pretty formidable--and this is without much production from that cuddly-Justin-Verlander-killer The Panda!  How fun would a 7th game in late October between these frenemies be.....oh Nellie!

*What a tremendous week of NorCal/SoCal rivalries!  Which makes me wonder, with all the professional success of the Bay's pro teams, are the Raiders paying some sort of penance for moving to LA?  Even the Niners with Harbaugh-Carroll feud kindle the geographical rivalry?  What could be worse for Mr. Davis than to see his own son, and his beloved Silver and Black, floundering.  I am not the judge, but hopefully 10 years of doldrums will suffice.  Of course, bringing back Gruden, er Chucky might settle the dept!

*Playoff hockey deservedly receives a lot of love this time of year.....but don't forget about the NBA guys.
Ironically, I firmly believe what makes the NCAA Men's basketball Tournament so compelling, the neutral site games.  Imagine if pro teams played the same format......I know, I know, follow the money.

*Who would have ever imagined the day when the Wub's and the Clippers, the Clippers, might be the most watched NBA first round playoff series?  Only the Easter Bunny saw this one coming!

*Speaking of the Big Bouncing fellow, the "Guardians" an entertaining film to watch with the kidos.

*Rawhide Rant:  Great piece in on the Fresno Monsters website regarding broadcaster Donny Baarnes. Donny is the voice of the Visalia Advanced A Team.  The broadcasting profession similar to the coaching profession.  While their is clearly competition to move up the ladder, in the process, a fraternity forms. Donny is a true professional, and the type of guy that is just simply hard not to like!

*A's minor league note:  infielder Tyler Ladendorf absolutely raking in Sacramento.  The A's are not very athletic up the middle (Hey skeptics, I am sure of one thing--I know athletic!), and the book on Tyler early is that he was an athlete, not a polished baseball player.  Hum.....just remember where you heard it first!

*Good times continue with The Derby and the NFL draft right around the corner!

*On this good Friday--and especially this weekend--the toast belongs to THE BIG GUY in the sky.  Enjoy the weekend everyone!

A Masterful Sunday....

*Today really a good day to snuggle in, take in the final day of Masters, and do a little channel surfing of your favorite MLB team!

*Oh that Sonny Gray.  There were questions heading into 2014 just how good Sonny Gray would be.  Well, it's only been 3 starts, but A's fans everywhere are soaking in Gray's rays, and an ERA under 1.00!  Gray is taking the edge off the gloom created by closer Jim Johnson's early season troubles.  I believe Johnson will be fine, after he controls his "yips."  The A's have gathered a ton of talent in the bullpen--it will all work A's fans, trust me. (I realize this concept very unsettling.)

(*I have got to give MadBom--or Maddy as I like to call him--props for going yard with the bags juiced!  He's no Sonny, but the Abe Lincoln look has earned a table in the Get Down Lounge!)

*While shortstop prospect Addison Russell has zoomed to the top of the A's prospect list, another shortstop, Daniel Roberston is not far behind.  The smooth Robertson, just looks like a ballplayer, and many prognosticators having him moving over to third eventually, to be Russell's wingman.  I however envision a different future to the young man from Upland CA:  second base.  In fact the young Roberston reminds me of my spouse's favorite all-time Athletic....that's right, Mark Ellis!

*Perhaps parity has reached the MLB?  On Sunday April 13, all American League teams were tightly bunched--the entire group possessing between 5 and 7 wins!  The National league maintains greater disparity as those pesky Milwaukee lead the league with 9 wins.  This will be interesting to follow thought out the season.

*By the way the new interpretation of the "transfer rule" just makes no sense.

*Soaking in the Master's similar to taking in a good book.  The twists and turns, the new character plots, which seem to soar and fade instantaneously.  How about a former Division II basketball player shooting a 30 on the front nine Saturday?  While the Master's does have it's issues, it's drama tough to equal.

*What is all this noise about the Wub's?  They are in the playoffs again, and in the NBA that's all the matters.  Mark Jackson has a dine a fine job with his team again, thus I just cannot wrap my mind around all the chatter surrounding his job security?  For much of the season, the Warriors have played without center Andrew Bogut, and his intimidating 7-foot self. (Ideally the W's will draw the Clippers in the first round--that will be entertaining!)  In the end, with all of the success of Bay Area Sports teams over the years, there seems to be a prevalent thinking that winning titles is "easy."  Just ask Sacramento Kings fans--or loyal Chicago Cubs followers!

*Unless of course you are at UConn!  Wow, I can't imagine how fun the ride must be on the Huskies bandwagon!  I just don't get all the lame destructive acts young people feel the the need commit while celebrating championships?  I sound like an old guy, wait.....

*The NFL draft is getting closer....and I am feeling the intrigue.  Now that the Raiders once again look like a football team, my interest in draft day peculating.  I would love to see Clemson WR Sammy Watkins still on the board at #5, Mr. Reggie, are you hearing me?  The Raiders may not be great in 2014, but they sure can be entertaining!

*Speaking of traditions, The Derby is right around the corner.  Keep this horse in mind, California Chrome.  This CenCal native, raised at the Harris Ranch near good old Coalinga, captured the Santa Anita Derby last weekend in SoCal.  (The SAD actually on my Bucket List--oh well someday!)

*Rawhide Rumbling:  while the DBacks have looked dreary out of the gate, third basemen Brandon Drury has been smoking!  The young slugger from Grants Pass Oregon has 11 RBI's after 10 games--now that's raking when it counts.  My two other favorite Rawhide thus far, relievers Jimmy Sherfy and Henry "Hank" Garcia.  Sherfy was a closing machine at the University of Oregon, and my man Hank, well, I just love the lefty's aura on the hill.  Combined this dynamic duo has yet to surrender a run while strilking out 14 opposing batters.  Come on now, remember relievers were the new market inefficiency!

*Need someone to accompany you to a Wub's playoff game:  look no further!  Thus to UConn--men and women--and to the men in Gold and Blue, today the toast if for you!

Let's Play Two! Lots Of Barton Angst.....

*Well, Well, Well......

*First rain in California--lots of it--which has been rare this season;  then a rain out, which happens, oh I would say rarely;  then the rarest item of all, a Day/Night Doubleheader.  All those bay area kids today with no school--including Big Kids--this could be a great day for you.

*Here is quick recap from Game 1:  The A's battled but it just want their night.  Sonny Gray will battle, and the youngster can field his position.  Sonny displayed Gold Glove caliber defense opening night, making a handful of plays that, well, lets just say, former A Bret Anderson would not have made!

*Recap continued...A's fans, and now even teammates, have a lot of angst regarding Daric Barton.  In the eighth, Barton led off the single, and was standing on second when Josh Donaldson was at the plate.  JD crushed one.  CRUSHED it.  On a night where the heavy air in Oakland was no friend to hitters, it appeared as if Donaldson had put the A's 3-0.  Not so fast, the baseball gods are indeed messing with the A's, as Donaldson's blast bounced off the top of the O.Co's cushioned fence.  The ball bounced right back to the alert Indians center fielder who quickly relayed the ball back to the infield.  Enter Barton.  The ball was tricky to read, but instead of getting himself halfway between 2nd and 3rd, he did a poor Chow-Chow-Chow rendition of running in circles.  Barton ended up at third, and Donaldson stood at first, irked at his 400 foot single.  Now I am not convinced Barton would have scored, but he could have.  Thus, after the game all I heard was Barton, Barton, Barton, but here are some other thoughts on game 1:

     1.  Jed Lowrie subsequently came up with the bases loaded and proceeded to look baaaadddd striking out.  Early in the game with one out, Lowrie had runners on second and third--when a ground ball would have plated the A's first run.  Lowrie hit it hard, but up the middle off of the pitcher, who scrambled and made the out at first.  Lowrie had two chances to put the A's ahead, and did not get the job done.  The first at bat Lowrie hit it hard, but oh those baseball gods!  Lowries' at bats were where the game was decided.

     2.  After Barton led off the top of the eigth, why not insert speedy infielder Sam Fuld?  When Barton was on second, Fuld, again a possibility.  Fast forward to the bottom of the ninth, two on two out.  Nick Punto had pinch hits for Soggie.  Now, my question is this:  the A's needed one swing, why not let Derek Norris take a rip?

Barton made a gaff.....but there was clearly a little more to the story!

For my son's sake, he's 8, the A's will not lose their 11 consecutive opening day game in 2015!  You read it here first!

*The Wubs, man when they need a big win on the road, they deliver.  Last night's game a huge step to ensuring post season play.  Is Steph Curry the most likable NBA star?

*Since the Raider passed on DeSean Jackson....if Clemson wideout  Sammy Watkins is there at number 5 when the Raiders pick, he is headed to OTown!

*Rawhide Rant:  One more day, and then they play!

Is This The Year? Certainly! "Sonny" Days Ahead!

*From the Get Down Lounge....

*Forty seasons ago the A's beat the Dodger$ in the World Series--and in 2014 my crystal ball says it will happen again!  Clearly the rain is a sign of a new beginning, or as I interpret the weather, the beginning of a new champion (Sorry Indians Fans!).  Another key sign--no King Felix to start the season as the opposition on the hill!

*If you haven't head the tune "There the Oakland A's," by The Baseball Project, well then you have got to hear it for yourself.  You can try You Tube;  the website "Athletics Farm" added pictures, and can I just say, the video and song is fantastic!

*What about the injury to Jarrod Parker naysayers will contend?  Keep an eye on Jessie Chavez and newcomer Drew Pomeranz.  Pomeranz came over in the trade for Bret Anderson, and nothing better for a young hurler's confidence than leaving Coors Field in Denver, and landing in the O.Co.!  Chavez will start the season flying under the radar, but he won't remain their for long!  The Baseball Gods always like to throw their proverbial gyro-ball, but that will make the title that much sweeter.

(**Sonny Gray battled a tight strike zone, walking two, but the Indians go down without scoring.)

*In the off season the A's loaded up their bullpen, added a reborn Scott Kazmir, and added a little speed and versatility in speedy outfielder Craig Genty and versatile infielder Nick Punto.  If need be, I can see the A's going for it all by adding a key piece or two at the trading deadline.

*For the first time in a longggggg time, the A's are recognizable, and the 2014 edition will return many key regulars.  In a bit of surprise, the A's signed Coco Crisp for two more years.  Coco is the face and perhaps personality of the franchise, and his signing was a key indicator things are indeed changing in Oakland!

(**A's go 1-2-3, on to the second!)

*This off season, unlike in recent years, the talk of moving was nonexistent.  In fact, the A's are willing to sign a 10 year lease to stay in the O.Co.  This a savvy business move, putting a lot of pressure on the Raiders, who have said they need a new home, and signed only a one-year lease.  I would hate to see the Raiders leave Oakland, but it makes sense for the city of Oakland to commit to the A's, finally.  Maybe, just maybe, the Raiders end up sharing the new house in Santa Clara?!?  If the Raiders were indeed to leave the O.Co, I could see a few changes made to make the O.Co a little more friendly.  (I gave my ideal solution previously-have the Raiders play a game or two or three in Santa Clara until the baseball season is finished--hey, can't we all just get along.)

(**Gray gives up a hit, but looks pretty sharp--pitch count up around 50 however, and it's still the second inning.  Hey bullpen, you guys will get to flex your muscles early--like today!)

*Running a reverse here, the Raiders actually seem to be putting together a decent team.  The pick in the first round looms as the lynch pin, but there will plenty of time for that later.

*The W's, oooh, they do have a way of making thing interesting.  Injuries to Bogut and Lee were the reason they lost to the Knicks last night, but their playoff spot is anything but a lock.  Stay tuned.  There has also been a lot of discussion surrounding Mark Jackson's job security. Really?  Come on now, the W's are in the mix, again, and that in itself IS something positive!

(*Cespedes K's, yuck; Jaso doubles...but he is left stranded.  Ball clearly not carrying well in the heavy air.   No score after 2!)

*Rawhide Rant:  yes, indeed the Hide open up against the A's Advanced A team, the Stockton Ports.  The park in Visalia, a great place to see the game.  Come on now, adding features all part of the program!  I have another item for you:  now you can also follow me on Twitter, at 100percent3G, naturally!

*Irish Lady Hoopsters make the Final Four, again, and look like they are on a collision, with the U Conn ladies, again.  ND and UConn, may be the best college rivalry going in all of the land.  Of course, if Florida and Kentucky meet in the Men's Final, their might be a few folks from the SEC who would beg to differ!

*Die hard A's Fans--even my wonderful spouse asking what's up with Daric Barton?  Poor DB, then he is followed in the batting order by the A's WonderBoy, and Mr. Likable, Eric Sogard.  Hey, maybe this will finally be the season Barton puts it all together!

*In the end, it may all come down to Reddick and Cespedes returning the forms they flashed in 2012. When they do....it will be a lot of fun in the O.Co.

*The overall good vibes buzz around the A's reminds of way back when in 88 and 89.  1988 was a pretty good year until that $#*^&)! World Series against Orel and Gibson.  Aarrrgh!  1989 ended up a little better as you recall, however the Loma Prieta earthquake took center stage, and the A's quietly claimed the 4th title in the East Bay.

*Time for the A's to shine--yes indeed, "Sonny" times in the O.Co once again!

*Finally, this one definitely goes out to my father, who passed this week after 88 and a half years on this earth.  My love of the A's, Raiders, and Irish...well, you can guess where that came from!  To you Dad, here's to you.  Also...here's to that band The Baseball Project;  when I heard the song Saturday, I laughed and cried simultaneosly.  Hey, Hey, here come the Oakland A's.....

(**Barton with two nice defensive plays, as they head to the bottom of the 5th in chilly Oaktown with no score.)

Baseball and March Madness...Welcome to Dance SLO!

*Living Large from the couch this evening......

*Well baseball season is just about here as the Dodgers and DBacks do battle in just a little over an hour.  That's 1 a.m. California time!  I am a little disappointed with all the diehard Dodger fans, I mean, where are all the opening night parties Dodgers fans? I know Gigantes, I can hear you loud and clear--the typical Dodger fan will be tuning in around 2 a.m......

*Good TV night, as A's and Giants were on the tube, along with NCAA Basketball.  The pitchers looked pretty good for both teams, which made me think the lights in Scottsdale night quite up to MLB standards.  Two guys who looked very good:  Giants starter Yusmeior Petit, and my new fav Sonny Gray.  One guy who did not lood good, Yoenis Cespedes.  I would just like to see Cespy square one up once in a while!  If the A's have an Achilles heal, it is thier defense at short and second--sure enough, Jed I-Can-Hit-Lowrie burped up a throw, and Nick Punto whiffed a would be double play.  Brandon Moss contributed by dropping one at first--again, one can only hope the lighting was a factor!

*Poor, poor VCU...up 4 late in the game, and the ending simply hard to believe.  As time is running down--3.6 seconds to be exact--VCU is called for a foul, as tonight's Cinderella Stephen Austin is shooing a three!  Sure enough, Desmond Haymon drains the three, then coolly makes the free throw to send the game into overtime.   Oh man...VCU is going to have trouble sleeping for a while.  My only question as I watched this play go down:  with so little time, force the Lumberjacks to shoot a two, and cover all the 3's.  I like to call it "No Foul, No Three's Defense."  Tonight's game a classic example of why this tournament is Dubbed March Madness!

*Just Curious:  The NCAA tournament is so lovingly unpredictable, in my opinion, largely due to the Neutral Site Game Format.  Why don't other sports adopt this format?  The NFL playoffs for example, hey even the NBA.  I know, I know, follow the money......but there maybe something to the March Madness Format!

*To soon to talk about the NBA playoffs...but the Western Conference's second season is going to be very entertaining.  Don't forget, Bron Bron and the Heat are waiting in the wings!  (Sorry Pacers Fans!)  It will be nice to have the W's in the postseason for consecutive years.

*Well, well, well-well, well, the Raiders have a pulse.  The Matt Schaub signing a little like eating vanilla ice cream, but they do the fell of a .500 team.  OK Mr. McKenzie, and Coach DA, now show me something in the draft.  I can envision the Raiders trading down....and maybe even back up.  They need a young, stud, defensive lineman who can clog things up in the middle.  Maybe even two!  I love Pitt tackle Aaron Donald, and Fighting Irish Louis Nix III.  Of course, if Clemson wideout Sammy Watkins is on the board--hard to pass him up--unless, they can trade down and grab some extra picks.  All of a sudden this team has a chance to be decent....this draft, huge!  Why not a quarterback you ask--I just don't think any of the top guys are Andrew Luck like.  Now they may take a QB in the second or third round, but I think Schaub is the guy for now.   The draft will be interesting for the Silver and Black!  Allthough, I have to admit, having Watkins, with DMac, and James Jones....well, mix in T Pryor to run once in while; call me a dreamer, but this team could be very entertaining!

(I just heard on Yahoo Sports the idea of the Raiders moving to AT & T park in San Francisco.  Hum.....nah.)

*Visalia Rawhide open up 13 days at home against the Stockton Ports.  The Hide are a DBack affiliate, while the Ports, that's right, they belong to your Oakland A's.  Both teams compete in the California League, categorized as a Class A-Advanced league.  Not many seats closer to the field than those in Visalia by the way--you can literally hear the ball hum as it is fired in from the mound!

*Well tonight I raise my glass to:  All of those Cal Poly SLO alums who were loving their team's run into March Madness.  (The Mustangs surprisingly won their conference tournament--the Big West--then knocked off Texas Souther in the First Four/Play in Game.)  Sac State your next!  Also to my wonderful spouse, for grillen up some tasty steaks to go with a stellar night of sports television!

*Also, you can now follow us on twitter at 100percent3Gwriter.

Bracketology, Predictions, and a Stadium Solution

*Know that the games have begun.....

*Florida, Villanova, Creighton, and Louisville make the trip to Dallas for the Final Four.  I wanted to include the Aztecs of San Diego State, you know to represent the West Coast, but in the end I just couldn't do it! Louisville will always have a special place in my heart, due the Dr. Dunkenstein, Darryl Griffith,  and his 1980 National Champion teammates.  As I recall, those Cardinals were fun to watch!  The head coach way back then was Denny Crum--I love that name too!  Fast forward, hard for a team to win back to back Championships however, so even though my head is telling me Florida, I am picking the Blue Jays of Creighton to hoist their first National Championship Trophy!

*Well, the A's had a tough week with the news on Monday that Jarrod Parker will undergo a second Tommy John surgery.  I always kind of wondered why they weren't a little more protective of him the last two years--the guy was grinder, that's for sure.  However, I am curious why the second most famous Barry in the Bay Area has been mentioned as possible replacement, you know, Mr. Zito.  Zeets is chilling somewhere, but I am just saying, the man who coined the termed scuffle, would fit right in with that zany Oakland clubhouse.

*Keep an eye on Drew Pomeranz....he's the lefty and former #5 pick in the draft the A's acquired for Bret Anderson.  Jesse Chavez and Tommy Milone will start the year in the rotation, but I have an inkling, we are going to see Mr. Pomeranz.  I get this feeling way down in my pancreas, that DP is going to enjoy pitching a whole bunch more in the O.Co, then in hitter friendly Coors Field.  I mentioned before to keep and eye on Chavez too.

*Well with the Dodgers and DBacks just about set to tee it up down under, how about an early MLB prediction?  Is the year to follow the money?  Will the Dodgers and Yankees meet in a clash of Evil Empires in the 2014 Fall Classic?  Can the Red Sox rekindle the magic in Fenway?  Ditto the Giants on the other side of the Bay?  Over the last 10 years, the Bostonians  and the Gigantes have combined for 5 World Series Titles!  Is this the year the Tigers finally get over the hump?  Ah, what the heck, for the 3rd time in 40 years, it will be the I-5 series, A's and Dodgers.

*Well the Raiders have actually made some surprising, very solid moves.  Tonight it looks indeed the Raiders are bringing back CWood--Charles Woodson for one more season.  Thus far, the Raiders would appear better, but that draft will be so crucial.  I can envision them trading down, in order to acquire another pick, and grabbing either QB Jimmy Garappolo or David Carr;  even San Jose State's David Fales is a possibility in the 3rd or 4th round.  For the record, I like the McFadden signing.  I mean, why not--sure he has been brittle, but on a team currently devoid of big time play makers, DMac can only give opposing defenses something to think about.

*Speaking of moving, the O.Co situation appears a real mess.  The A's appear to want a 10 year lease, and some reports are suggesting the A's would like to see a new scoreboard.  Hum? The Raiders want a new home to play period.  Well, how about this idea:  the Raiders can play a game or two over in the Taj De Niner until the baseball season is finished.  Once the A's have won the series, than the Raiders can come back home.  How is that for a win-win?  With a new big screen!

*Tonight I raise my glass to those undefeated Wichita State Shockers--that was quite a run fellas! Enjoy the madness this weekend, and even a little baseball from Down Under!

To Kitchen Sink Sanwhiches!

*To a Getaway Friday in The Lounge.....

*Today, 85 years ago, my dear mother Dolores Joyce Viegas (Fonseca) was born, in the tiny, tiny Sacramento Delta outpost of Ryde Californaia.  Dolores is a great sport, who always has enjoyed her sports.  I have to give her credit to exposing me to tennis, and also Peggy Fleming and Olympic Figure
Skating!  Mom's greatest gift were those fabulous and never duplicated "Kitchen Sink" Sandwhiches she would hand to you on the way out the door, or pull out deep from her bag.  Usually comprised on a roll, with a hunk of chesse and pouporrui of tasty meats.....man I am getting hungry.  Mom, you're a good egg, and here is to a great day!

*Can I just say the Warrior-Cliffpers budding rivalry is NBA FANTASTIC!  Finally, a real old shool rivalry where the teams, genuinely DO NOT like each other.  The fact that is Nor Cal vs SoCal--while only of regional interest--is rich, like a NorCal Cabernet Sauvignon!  The W's have played very well after the All-Star Break and appear headed for back-to-back playoff appearances.  Now if they can somehow draw the Clipps, it's on.  Mark Spears of Yahoo Sports, one of may favorite NBA analysts.  Love the big man's deep, sooth, and crackly voice.

*A's fans, the sight of Scott Kazmir putting up zeroes in Spring Training only heightens the anticipation for the upcoming season.  Not a ton of intrigue in Phoenix this Spring, but there are a few questions.  Will the carry two or three catchers, and how much will John Jaso even catch?  Who wins the 5th spot in the rotation--A.J. Griffin appears to be the front runner, but don' rule out Tommy Milone, or darkhouse candidate Jessie Chavez.  Chavez has been slated as the long relief guy in the pen, but his numbers this spring have been starter material.  Has Big Mike, Michael Taylor finally put it all together. The former Stanford alum was the key component of the Matt Holliday trade, and thus far, things have not panned out as he or the A's would have hoped.  Fast forward to this Spring, and is possibly Big Mike yet another rags to riches story ala Brandon Moss and Josh Donaldson? Time will tell.

*The Raiders finally, finally a made a positive splash with signing of Justin Tuck and Lamar Wooley.  They still have a ways to go, but a least for a moment, Raiders fans everywhere exhaled a huge sigh of relief--and possibly hope! I am here to say, after the draft, the Raiders will sign Michael Vick, and he will be the Raiders starting QB. If speedy Clemson Wide Receiver Sammy Watkins is still on the board, I say the Raiders will grab him too. With the surprise resigning of Darren McFadden, the Raiders would at least have some NFL play makers.  Stay tuned Raider fans, the drama is just unfolding.

*Thus today, Mom, I raise my glass to you!  Also to Sac State Men's Coach Brian Katz, for getting his Hornets into the Big Sky Tournament--exciting game yesterday, the result just not quite right!  Finally, to legendary California Community College Hoops Coach Denny Aye, you are back where you belong.  Good luck to the Chabot Gladiators in the State Championships.

Prime Time Baby! No love for the Spectacles or Stadiums--however March Madness is here!

*A Rare Prime-Time Appearance in the Get Down Lounge....

*Come on now, Nerd Power loses out to the Big Apple?  MLB is still wiping the egg from their proverbial faces after Eric "Harry Potter" Sogard almost became the "face" of MLB.  Somehow Soggie managed to lose to David Wright of the Mets--that's right, who?  It was a silly promotion to begin with, however A's fans, and perhaps the Silicon Valley base in general twittered away!  It would seem in the AL, there would be the BIG 4, Trout, Jeter, Big Poppy, and maybe Verbeast (Justin Verlander).  In the NL, my top 4 would be Dodgers Puig and Kershaw, Harper of the Nats, and Buster P.

*The W's love playing in the Garden, that's for sure.  Curry didn't put up a 50 plus game again, but his first half was pretty impressible.  The burden of high expectations have weighed on the team the entire season, and they will continue to grow as the playoffs inch closer.  The Bay Area embodies the "California" Bandwaggon mindset, in that fans want Titles, or nothing else.  I suggest Warrior fans should just be glad to make the playoffs for consecutive seasons, then proceed from there.  Currently the Warriors would draw Portland in the first round, with those Warrior Killers the Spurs waiting on the horizon.  The Spurs visit the ROAR-Oracle later this month in a can't miss game for fans of the Blue and Gold.

*The Jimmer Shimmer experiment recently ended in Sacramento.  I thought the Warriors might give Jimmer a look as his game a knock off to that of Steph Curry.  However, before that could happen, the Bulls are given a Jimmer a looksie.  Kings fans, remember the good old days with C-Web, and Vlade and the Gang.
AARGH....so close to championship those team's were, so close!

*Poor Mark Davis, the guys just can't seem to win, literally.  (Psst Mark--are you keeping an eye on all of those Niner Free Agents, and Jimbo of course?)  The Raiders need a new stadium but where?  The O.Co is in a great locale for football, but it creates a an issue for the other tennant.....

*......so maybe after Uncle Bud retires, and the A's win a 5th World Series Ring in Oakland, then the A's will SUE MLB for the right to move?  I always thought San Jose had an interesting but difficult case against MLB, but in my opinion, it is the A's that need to sue to move, not the city.  A stadium down by the Port seems to have a little traction, but it has a longggggggg way to go.  What is so tragic, is how the A's and Raiders seemed so linked at the hip--exactly where they don't want to be!

*I just don't see the Niners wanting the Raiders as a tenant--unless, unless, the new stadium does not quite become the financial bonanza all parties are looking for.  Moving to Santa Clara could be a short term win for the Raiders....talk about a strange marriage.  How great would it be to see the Niners and Raiders on top of the NFL at the same time?  Amy Trask had some interesting things to say about Dennis Allen and Reggie McKenzie by the way.

*Know I really wonder--what is the Browns causing the Hargaugh Drama, or did Jimbo's agent leak a little info?  Very tasty over on the West Side.  In the end, does it matter how Balke and Coach H get along?  Pro sports all about the winning baby!

*By the way, let me be the first to say, the Seahawks are going to struggle.  Here is Russel Wilson, after a long season, still messing with baseball?  Tusk, Tusk.  It is so hard in this time and age for teams to repeat, merely because of all the distractions of being a winner.  Smile Niner fans, the Seahawks won't be hosting the NFC Championship game in 2015.  (See, can't we all get along?)

*Baseball less than 30 days away for Bay Area fans--less for Dod$er blue faithful.  Will this be the year to follow the money?  Dodgers and Yankees on top?  You will have to wait for my predictions naturally.

*Here in Prime Time I raise the glass to Mr. Mark Davis, wishing him well.  His task and the shoes he has to fill--not to mention the ghosts and shadows--are great.  Just believe Mr. MD, just believe.

*Don't look now, but March Madness is here!

Browns are the Real Instigators; Nerd Power Rolls On! Niner Fans, You Are Going to Love This One!

*From the Get Down Lounge,  a little midweek bit, with glasses on of course!  Man oh, are those Cleveland Browns dirty!

*Is it me, or are the Browns to blame for all the Harbaugh Drama?  Clearly their leaking of news regarding talks between the Niners and Browns was meant to stir things up in Ninerland.  The Browns may have succeeded in a way they probably never saw coming. Now try this 49er fans--sit down first.  Clearly there is some riff somewhere in regards to Harbaugh and Niners GM Trent Balke, but where exactly and what the problem is remains to be seen.  Harbaugh has two years left on his contract, and after those two years expire, what is the only other NFL team Harbaugh could be the head coach and not have to change addresses?  I told you to sit down.....that's right, your Oakland Raiders.  How juicy a drama does that become?  Sound crazy, well, Mark Davis is the son of the Czar himself, Mr. Al Davis.  If anyone can put up with a demanding, grinder, my way or the highway type of personality, it is Mark Davis.  Harbaugh has been the master of the reclamation project, and is there a better project than the Raiders.  Hey don't blame, blame those trouble making Browns for stirring the pot!

*Eric Sogard the face of MLB?  Well, who saw that one coming?  Sogard just got past Buster Posey in MLB's contest, and it sure looks like fun-loving, social media following A's fans are rallying!  A's brass could never have imagined such a successful marketing campaign!  Following two division titles, and even the A's spending a little dough, I predict a particularly festive summer in the O.Co this summer!  Sogard exploits have been dubbed Nerd Power, and thus far, Nerds rule!  Sogard, an Arizona State alum, by all accounts appears a very likeable, well rounded fella.  Interestingly, his dad played college ball, and his brother is a pitcher in the Astros system.

*BoMel has yet to announce the starting rotation, but with Parker, Gray, and Kazmir set to pitch in consecutive games this spring, the rotation is a foregone conclusion.  However, each Spring Training brings it share of story lines and surprises, and the games begin tomorrow with the A's and Giants doing battle.

*To Spring Training Jaunts everywhere, and to Nerd Power, I raise my glass to you!
