Well, well, well, it was a pretty interesting little 4-games series, up in the Bay, with the A's taking 3 of 4 from the defending World Series Giants. While still feeling the buzz from the week, I started to critically ponder the question of all questions:: do the A's have a window--now--where the World Series Title is in their grasp?
Here's what the A's have:
*A rotation filled with #3 caliber starters. No real true ace, and no real number 5. They also have a pretty good prospect toiling in Sacramento, in Sonny Gray. ( I love that name, Sonny Gray!)
*A very good back end of the bullpen with Grant Bleepity Bleep Balour; Sean Dr. Doolitlle, and Ryan the Cookie Man Cook. Even Jerry Blevins has been pretty good the last couple of years.
*Flexibility at the top of the lineup. Switching hitting Coco Crisp and Jed Lowrie make it tough on opposing managers late in games. If these two guys continue to be productive, and they both stay healthy, which is a pretty BIG IF, the A's offense will continue to produce.
*Star quality in Yo-Yo Yoenis Cespedes. He really has never put it all together this season for any stretch of time. If he does, or when he does, he literally is Reggie El Segundo.
*Emerging stars. Third baseman Josh Donaldson seems to have arrived. Time will tell. He is the 2013 version of Brandon Moss.
*Team Guys who accept and thrive in their roles. The leader of this group is outfielder/DH Seth Smith.
*A re-energized fan base. The spirit in the O.Co has really spiked since last September, along with the fact that most of the team has returned. It could indeed be another fun summer in Oaktown!
*Once again the Angels have gotten off to a snails pace of a start. Jared Weaver is one of three pitchers I hate to see on the mound vs the Green and Gold. The other two? Well it is King Felix of course and Justin Verlander. The Angels have plenty of season left, and their lineup reminds me of the guys that used to play against Bugs Bunny's team. I just wonder if they are too busy counting their $$ to be concerned with winning the division? The Angels and Tigers are very similar to me, with the Tigers getting the nod to do their starting pitching.
What the A's need to get over the Top:
*A bonafide ace. Cliff Lee is out there, so is Matt Garza. Marlin Rickie Nolasco is out there too, and perhaps the A's can work a deal with the Fish. How about a major deal including Marlin right fielder Giancarlo Stanton? The A's may be able to swing a deal with the Fish, following what the Jays were able to pull off over the winter.
*Right Field. Josh Reddick has really struggled in his career after the All-Star Break. Chris Young does not seem to be the answer. Michael Choice is another River Cat waiting for the call--but if they can pull of a trade for the G Man, well, I say, just do it! Brandon Moss also seems to have lost his majic. Moss became a parent again about a month ago, and I just wonder how much that affects his hitting?
*Their ability to scratch home runs against top flight pitching--the game vs Zito an example. They don't seem to hit sac flies much, and they leave a lot of runners stranded at third. I would also like to see them bunt a little more, not a lot, personnel and the situation will dictate when and where. I would love to see them hit and run a little more often as well. The A's lost to Detroit primarily because they couldn't solve Verlander, twice! Winning the pennant, appears to roll directly thought Motown again.
*If the Giants tail off, how about a trade of Jemile Weeks for Marco Scutaro. Giants would get youth and speed, the A's would get a real stick. I would have Marco DH, mixed in with some infield duties.
*The A's could use an athletic shortstop up the middle of the diamond, but hey who couldn't?
Thus, now may be the time for Billy and Beane and Co. to make their move. The Tigers still appear the team to beat, but right now there is not one lights out staff in the AL. Detroit is the closeest, but even their bullpen leaks.
What I learned from the Bay Bridge Series 2013:
*I sleep better when the A's win the series. I don't mind if the A's miss Cain every year.
*The Giants actually have a pretty good hitting line-up. Marco and Panda aren't winning any Golden Gloves that's for sure. Panda is fun, but man oh man, he is a lot of Panda!
*In my opinion, the Giants pitching is just worm from all the tight games and high-pressure innings from 2009-2012. Brian Wilson is hurt, and so is the San Man now; Timmy's velocity is down; Sabe-Sabes and co. have had the magic touch the last few years--but the trade of Zak Wheeler for Carlos Beltran not one of them. If they had signed Beltran, maybe, but they essentially traded a future starter for a 2 month rental. Wheeler would be in the rotation now. Hindsight is always 20-20, but this one might be a difference maker. The Giants don't have much to trade currently, however I do envision them being players in the free agent market this off season. I don't think their run is done, but they need to reload in the arms department.
*It is still my favorite time of the year!
Final note: 19 of us made the trip to Oaktown this year, although most of them were sporting that blasted Halloween color! My goal next year is to have over 20! Great group of people, great time.
On deck: the MLB draft starts next Thursday, June 6th.
June 1--Bartolo
*Bartolo was masterful last night hurling a complete game shutout against the White Sox. Grip it, heave it.
Bart's line, 9 IP's, zero walks. Let's just hope his tests come up negative!
*The Angels--found away to give another one away last night!
*My main Sonny Gray--7 IP's, 7K's, on walk; and in Low A ball, Raul (another name I must love, RAh-ool) was dominating with 9 K's in 8 innings, also walking none. Raul pitches in Class A for the Beloit Snappers. (Reedley College people, Beloit the home of two time all-state performer Marquel Hoskins!)
*Did you see the successful bunt last night? BoMel must be reading this blog!
*If you are near OakTown June 1 or 2: Canary Cespedes T's for the first 10,000 today, June 1.
Coco Crisp cereal bowls for first 5,000 mijolitos tomorrow.
Enjoy the weekend, Gigos I know you miss the Green and Gold!

My Favorite Time of the Year, Baysball!
Ah yes, in just over 72 hours, it begins, the Bay Bridge Series. I would argue this is indeed the best interleague matchup going. The series is hotly contested, yet never seems to overheat. Fans of both teams will be seen in the following week, taligaiting together! In the stands there is plenty of razzing and booing, but it doesn't seem to spill over into hate. I am comfortable with my children attending these games.
It is a little like playing your sibling, you sure as heck don't want to lose, and when you win, you kind of blow it off, some. Down deep however, imagine Tom Hanks saying, "I want to win, I want to win.!"
Since the arrival of PacBall or AT&T or the House That Barry Built, the rivalry has changed a little. The Gigantes winning 2 of 3 World Series also has giving the Gigos a little amo. The Giants right now are like the smarter, better looking, successful sibling, with very few warts. They flash the bling bling of the World Series Trophy (I have never understood the obsession with Giants fans and the World Series Trohpies? It's a little weird.) They drive a better car--even their kids and pets are smarter. They have the monopoly, and they are squeezing the dollar bills.
In Oaktown however, there is and has always been more personality. More fun. The younger sibling, bucking the trend, laughing and having a good time. Maybe a little unconventional, but cool, hip. Think Giambi, Beane, Reddick, these guys know how to par-tay! The last decade the A's have been oh so close to not only crashing the party, but in becoming belles of the ball. Back in 2010 the Giants coined the termed "torture," but if you want to hear some real torture (cue the violin) we could break down each of the playoff losses in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, and even 2012. How is this number, since 2000 the A's are 1-6 in playoff series', AAARGH! Let's go back a little furher. In 1992, the A's lost in the Chapmionship Series; in 1990, the A's were swept by Rod Dibble's pesky Reds. That means in the A's last 9 playoff series, the A's have gone 1-8. Know I could go back one more, but I mean, come on aren't we all a little tired of the Sweep in the 89 series? Eck pumping the fist, Ricky running wild. Ahh the good old days. Even that infamous stretch of 1988-1990 was painful, with two world series losses to the Reds and the Orel Hersheiser's Dodgers. AARGH. The A's won a ton of games but man of man was the postseason painful!
The first 2 times I watched Moneyball, I was sick. The Winning Streak is cool, and it was fun, but man, MAN, it just ain't the same. AARGH.
Now here we are, even though the Giants would seem to have everything tilting their way in this Baylicious rivalry, there is one, well, two three little items the Gigo don't like to talk much about. Turn the clocks back to 1972, and 1973 and then 1974. Perhaps the greatest and most unhearalded baseball team of all time managed the trifecta, 3 in a row. Catfhish, Reggie, Vida, Blue Moon, my man man Joe Rudi, Campy Campaneris and of course Rollie. Personality, baby, person-AL-ity. Even their blankety-blank tyrannical outside of the box owner Charlie O Finley had some style. Dude was crazy, but he won 3 in a row. As Hammer would say, "Can't Top That...."So, right now, it has been a Great little run for the perfect child gigos, but they still just can't seem to be the life of the party. Hey Gigos, 2 out 3 ain't bad, for a good team.
Gigos fans always play the attendance card, always. Yawn. Understood, point taken, yada yada yada. Funny, take a look at attendance of the Stick back in the 70's and 80's and where were all those "lifelong" Giants fans we see today? Dressed as Dodgers fans perhaps? Ooohhh, like that one huh? (You all say you hate Tommy Lasorda...but I don't know?) I believe one of the reasons A's attendance is up a little this year is because the tallk of moving has subsided. You don't hear San Jose mentioned by A's ownership much anymore. I am not saying it is dead, I am just saying the brass ain't talking about it. (It is to me ironic, that the A's and Raiders who are kind of joined at the hip, would really benefit of one or the other would get the stadium issue resolved. Personally, I think the Colisuem site is perfect for football, plenty of parking, and with BART access, it is just a great locale. However, when you have 81 games plus, it ain't just about the team or the park, you need other activities. You need restrauants, and things to do before and after games. AT& T or PacBell or whatever, is situated in a great locale--and props to the Giants ownership for getting that done. The A's need new home, the Raiders should stay. Whomever built Mt. Davis, with seats facing the sun, as my son Noah would say, that was "Crazy." Oh well, time will tell. I just have a feeling eventually San Jose is taking this thing to court. More irony, is how the A's actually help the Giants to stay when they were sold to the group in Florida but older siblings don't like to pay if forward, they bite their lip and think the young one always get better treated. Pay if forward gigos, pay it forward.)
I actually think if the A's struck out less, and maybe could run a little bit--like the Gigos, well then someday the A's might drink from the cup too--buy hey, we can leave the X and o's and Barry Zitos for another day.
So see, does it get better than this? The history, the proximity, the it's not a big deal but it kind of is thing going on! Buster and Panda vs Cespedes and the little missles. The games are usually close and well played, and you know the fans will be into it. Again, I know this series doesn't mean much to Giant nation, I know, I know, but then why do so many make the trek over to Coli? Humph? I'm just asking.
So there you go man, those of you on the East Coast, we got to get you over some time for a little sample of Baysball!
On Deck: Ladies, don't forget Father's Day right around the corner. US Open Golf is on the horizon as well. Sergio now the most uncool athlete on the planet!
Movie to watch: Perfect Catch. Quirky little diddy, so if you have seen all the baseball movies, like Trouble With the Curve, then I would recommend it.
PS: Sorry to Bron Bron and the Shawks--ooh I shoudn't say Shark too loud, the Panda might get hungry!
Only 72 plus hours to go!
Sing it Steve,"When the Lights, go down in the City, and the Sun Shines on the Bay-e-ay, oh I want to be there-air, in my city by the bay-e-ay, Oh, oh, O O O." He must have meant Charlie O, and clearly he was singing about OAK-TOWN baby! See you there!

Mom and Orb, two legends
Well, let's start with some famous quotes from my mother:
"If you don't like it, put ketchup on it." Pass is it on over.
"Keep your paints on." I think that about sums up the teaching in an Isleton Catholic home.
"I love you, but I can't trust you." Ouchh! Yet no one believes me when I say I am sensitive.
From the Get Down Lounge
Baseball season really counts after Memorial Day, so isn't it fitting that the Giants come to Otown om Memorial 27? Really, that's all I have got for this week regarding the Green and Gold. I am not quite sure if they are going through a collective Sophomore Slump, or if they still are a little intoxicated from last season's story book run, but man oh man did the A's (bleepppp!) this week. Ish it was depressing.
FYI: the home of the Visalia Rawhide, Rawhide Park is a gem of a ballpark. The stands are close to the action, and the team really tries to include something for everyone. The Rawhide is an affiliate of the DBacks. So, if you are ever in the neigborhood, I will make waffles for breakfast. The park is just about 40 minutes from the casa.
This week's tip of the hat goes to the Warriors. Their season too was a great little run. Nice to see the sea of yellow in the ROAR-acle. The Spurs were just too good--interesting read on their coach, Greg Popovich in SI. Tony Parker may just be one of the most underrated and unheralded NBA players of all-time. Looks like the Kings will staying in Sacramento although it is interesting how Kansas City never comes up in the conversation-->remember, the Kings came from somewhere else too.
The Kings saga reminds me of a tour guide in Portugal. On a tour in the old country I realized a pattern in her history lessons. When ever the Portuguese went into other lands they were "Exploring." When foreign people moved in they were "Invading." Hum. Well, Sacramentans didn't mind the Invading of KC, but they sure didn't like the Exploring of those pesky Seattle types.
I try to keep an eye on Hockey for my man Tim Cannata--his Boston Bruins are feeling it, that's for sure. Four goals in the last period, now that's hockey. Who needs a goalie anyway? My sister's Sharks however, are in a bit of hole in LA. Am I the only one who would like to see the lighted puck back on television? In the future the Wild will be the team of the Lounge, wada wada wada!
Last but not least, this Saturday marks the second leg of Horse Racing's Triple Crown, the Preakness. The race starts at 3:20 PST. I am still staying with Itsmyluckyday, but, I just got a feeling, Mylute, and Rosie the Rider just may make history Saturday. By the way, anyone want to go in on a racehorse?
One Deck: The French Open...and of course my favorite time of year the Bay Bridge Series!

Mudders and Mudders, and the 22% pole.
Well quite a week.
First of all, I firmly believe persons with any ties to Rio Vista are just bummed by the news of Ted Machado and his family. For those of you who don't know, google the River News Herald and/or Ted Machado, and you can read about Ted. Trajic. I didn't realize he had made so many acting roles by the way! So its a little hard to be as funny and sarcastic as usual; just is. I have a daugter, and I would hope someday I too will be driving her to take the SAT. Uhck. I just want to give all of RV nation a hug. I will start you Flaherty, since after all, you and I are the orignal BFF's!
The Derby was a Mudder. Sure was--and it was so bad, the graphics people didn't even know which horse was which! That crazy mammal Orb ran a great race. On to Baltimore and the Preakness. May 18, mark your calendars.
Those umps in Cleveland were just Mudders. I mean, I kind-of-sort-of swore off to not using the Tuck word anymore, but man, the A's were Tucked in Cleveland. How could 4 guys not see that was a HR. That makes me think none of them has ever played, coached, or owned a bank, because they do not know the feeling of being ROBBED! Or jobbed, you pick. That is an infinity ish. I would love to hear Jon Gruden's take on this one! The late, great, Bay Area Announcer must be fuming in the announcing heavens, and using those big words like preposterous and assanine. Ish.
Throw in a Holy Toledo too--because the Warriors are a lot like Dos Esquis, in that they are very interesting and entertining. Hey if anyone has an extra ticket for a game in Oaktown--no I am not proud, let me know, I am in!
So the A's...sitting at the 22.2% pole. This point in the season is a bit of a plateau I believe. They are 6 weeks in, after 6 weeks in Arizona give or take. I believe that is THE definition of a Grinding. Plus they are a little banged up, and I would contend a little hungover from last year's surprising ride. The haven't pitched well, or played very good defense; they also have not win any or many low scoring games. I would contend--and no pun intended--they have not played very crisp ball. My how things can change in a year's time! Last year at this time, A's fans were just hoping for a .500 season. Today, May 10th, I want it all!
Raise the Bar BoMel, Raise the bar. We want to win that last game of the season--lets to Oakland!
Giants fans this all I've got for you: does Gaudin pitch every game? When it's chilly like last night in SF, I recommend the Bailey's and Coffee. Dodger fans, I've got even less, except I did pick up Psyco Grienke in my Fantasy League. His health factor is the total X factor in the NL West.
Peace Everyone.
On Deck: Mother's Day May 12th. DO NOT MESS THIS UP MALES!
(PSST: In the hole, May 27th baby, the Gigos come across the Bay baby!)

On Deck: Mother's Day May 12th. DO NOT MESS THIS UP MALES!
(PSST: In the hole, May 27th baby, the Gigos come across the Bay baby!)

It's My Lucky Day, May 4 2013
"The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky Home,
'Tis summer, the people are gay;
The corn-top's ripe, and the meadow's in the bloom,
While the birds make music all the day."
First verse of My Old Kentucky Home, by Stephen C. Foster
Oh what a glorious day! Just like A.J. Griffin last night A's fans, I will be crooning this wonderful little toon around 6 p.m. EST. The Derby, the Kentucky Derby is finally here. Break out your hats, adult beverages or two (Mint Juleps if that's how you roll!), grab the kids and grandparents and settle in next to the flat screen. It's Derby time, and all is right in the world!
Drama, intrigue, story lines, 160,000 people going bonkers, mammals that run like the wind, I am getting giddy just writing about it! Man this race has it all--a female jockey, a black-american jockey, a horse owned by National Championship Basketball Coach Rick Pitino who is himself is no stranger to drama (he had some issues with faithfulness to his spouse!), Calvin Mr. Ride the Rail and come from behind Borel in the saddle, did I mention I was giddy?
So who am I predicting? Well in honor of Cinco De Mayo manana, I have got to go with Normandy Invasion, running from the 5 hole. (I don't know if that is customary vernacular to use a batting order term, but hey, give me another mocha or slurpee, I am keyed up people!) You all know how loyal I can be, well, when I am not driving bandwagons anyway, so I am still pulling for my horse, Itsmyluckyday! With a driver named Elvis, you know that horse will rocking and rolling--hah hah! Man, though, no way I can go against Calvin Borel--in 2009 Borel rode Mind That Bird, a 50-1 longshot, 50 to o n e, to victory--from the back of the pack mind you! Goldencents, Verrazono, and Orb are the morning line favorites. There has got to be a perfectly swell exciting grandeous mesmorizing explanation for that artistically creative name of Orb.
(Man my thoughts are so all over the place, I feel like Ray Fosse announcing! Fosse is the one-time A's catcher who is most famous for getting plowed by Pete Rose in the 1970 All-Star game. Ray is a bit of a homer, who, well, has unique and distinct oratation style! He turns answers into questions, which even the SF Chron writers in the Sunday Pink Section have noticed!)
So settle in people, settle, post time is 6:24 EST.
NorCal sports, are you kidding me? A's shut out the brittle Bronx Bombers who have just been hammered with injuries. Does not matter, a win is a win is a win. The A's, Angels, Mariners, and Rangers all pitched shut out's last night. Perhaps the AL West is the Best? Think these teams are glad that Commisioner Selig actually made a decsion and moved the Lastros on over? Does Calvin Borel like the rail baby!
The Warriors. Who had them in the Final Eight of the NBA? Oh, I see a lot of hands up out there wearing those yellow t-shirts. You know what, and you heard it here first, the W's can beat the Spurs. The matchup with San Antonio should be a great one. Who saw the Warriors and the Grizzlies in the Western Conference Finals? Yes, I know, I am getting ahead a little.
The Gigos--Giants fans are stilling grinning from the Bus going down town in the bottom of the ninth to knock off the D$dger$ 2-1. So if the Dodgers miss the playoffs by a 5 games or less, think that Greinke tackle of of Carlos Quentin comes into play? Classic boneheadedness. See Gigos, I CAN make you smile. People always think I am Dodgers fan--is it the Davey Lopes style mustache? Kills me.
Then, just after the Bus goes deeps, the Sharks, the Shaaaawks, the future home of the A's Sharks, scoreeeeeeeeee in OT to stun the Conucks. (What's a Conuck, is it like a Conoli, um yum.) My ojos are so bad and viejo, I can't even tell if the puck goes in. Remember when ESPN did the orange puck, I love that?
So, I just watch the reaction of the goalie--when the puck goes in, the goalie drops the head with that "ah man" look. 2-0 Sharks. It ain't over, but the way I look at things, (if you have ever seen my run you would know why!) I would always prefer to be in front. Sure there is more pressure out in front, sure the team or opponent coming from the back gives all the haymakers, but I will always take a wire to wire win. Always.
Is this the best year ever for NorCal professional sports? The 70's were great for Oaktown, you know Super Bowl win, 1 2 3 World Series wins in a row, consecutive style; NBA title for the W's. I mean had the Niners just ran the ball one of the last four plays of the Super Bowl, just once, well, San Franciscans would have been going nuts. Regardless, I would contend that yes indeed, the past 12 months has been pretty golden. With that, cue Lights by Journey, and have a wonderful weekend.
There is even a compelling boxing tilt this evening in Mayweather vs. Guerrero, for you old school types.
Did I mention I was taking my favorite son Noah and his buddy to see Iron Man 3 today.? I know what you are thinking, great parenting. You are probably asking just how old the boy is aren't you? Like I tell my household, I ask the questions, and I do the jokes! Now cue the Black Sabbath version of Iron Man, and it's on. Yeahhhh baby, it's my lucky day!
